The exhibition "Tapi(x)erie_agora du design de Lauriane Obry" is created by Lauriane Obry and is presented as part of Romanian Design Week with the support of the French Institute in Romania.
Supported by French agencies, Agora du Design and Institut Français, graduated at ENSCi-Les Ateliers in Contemporary Creation and Technology, also weaver trained at the Manufacture des Gobelins, Lauriane Obry questions the traditional artisanal gesture and the monumental woven object — the tapestry.
What is the role and purpose of this ancestral object in today’s world? Can traditional know-how and modern tools coexist, and if so, why?
TAPESTRY AS IMAGE TECHNOLOGY, BETWEEN GESTURE AND ILLUSION
Blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies, this installation explores an alternative history of the tapestry with innovative gestures and technique of weaving. It brings a fresh perspective to traditional tapestries, renewing their form and use, fostering new interactions with audiences by embracing contemporary tools.
Driven by the desire to reveal creative processes and question the technique of tapestry, the heritage object reconnects with the tradition of immersive decoration. As a monumental textile medium with a strong narrative potential and traditionally guided by a cartoon, tapestry is an illusion object, navigating between originality and reproduction. Woven several times but still unique in every iteration, it’s an art of multiplicity.
With Verdure tapestry installation you are invited to use our own smartphones to create interaction with virtual artefact. In another dimension through digital tools (lights, smartphones, augmented reality), new woven versions unfold. Details, animations, and scale shifts are revealed in the hands of visitors. Weaving becomes a medium to convey information. Encoded, it transforms into a key to fostering new interactions with the old tapestry.
The exhibition "Tapi(x)erie_agora du design de Lauriane Obry" is part of RDW Design Flags, a format presented by Purcari.
