Since 2017, In Context Slănic-Moldova has been organizing cultural and educational programs aimed at creating experiences rooted in investigation, interaction, and cooperation—encouraging people to act in solidarity with nature and future generations for the production of a living future.
La Centrala is the circular design brand and sustainability tool of the project and its creative community.
As part of RDW 2025, In Context presents the installation Balance, created in collaboration with Eliza Yokina, founding member of architecture studios SYAA and Cumulus Architecture, and co-founder of the De-a Arhitectura Association.
A chair is, at its core, a symbol of stability—its most defining feature. In a world in constant transformation, nature, always seeking balance, reminds us that true stability comes from adaptability. Through this installation, we invite reflection on the role of design in the sustainable and ethical lifecycle of furniture.
Product designers, interior architects, and advocates of responsible living have the power to reinvent how we produce and consume design. Their creative vision can transform functional furniture into regenerative objects. The installation uses furniture salvaged from the renovation of a classroom—items that would otherwise be discarded, regardless of their condition.
This installation is a call to action for the creative community:
-
Interior designers are invited to reintegrate upcycled furniture into interior and commercial spaces.
-
Furniture and object designers can imagine new identities for these chairs.
-
Sustainable design enthusiasts are encouraged to support and incorporate these pieces into their own projects.
The 26 chairs included in the installation will be handed over to designers after the festival ends.
Participants are invited to fill out the application form for the chair redesign project by May 25, 2025, and later submit their own vision of how to integrate a chair into a new context—beyond the classroom. The most innovative proposals will be selected and developed collaboratively, contributing to the creation of a product portfolio ready to be reintroduced into a conscious commercial cycle.
The goal of the project is to create a true balance between resources and waste—through creativity and engagement—and to raise awareness about the environmental impact of the furniture industry.
